READING & COMPREHENSION

Just a few months ago, Olivia, a 34-year-old single mother, decided to adopt a child after years of volunteering at a foster home. Having been unemployed for almost two years due to health conditions, she recently returned to work as a therapist. She lives in a small apartment in the city and pays rent to a landlord who also happens to be the owner of the building. Olivia always wears glasses and takes public transport to get around. She enjoys skating on weekends using her old rollerblades, which she bought several years ago. Being of Asian ethnicity, she participates actively in a local cultural club that promotes diversity. One day, while waiting at the club, she witnessed a heated argument between two members, one of whom was accused of a crime. Although arrested later that day, the man was soon released. Olivia felt angry at the situation but remained calm so as not to distress the children around. To her, every person deserves a second chance.

Comprehension Questions:

FIRST DRAFT (student’s input)

In my teenage years, I used to cry a lot. Every small problem felt like the end of the world. I wasn’t able to handle stress well, and I had few close friends. I often felt different from the others.

However, I could write. I wrote poems, journal entries, and letters to myself. That writing helped me organize my feelings and understand myself better. I was able to learn emotional intelligence by observing and reflecting.

Now, I work with young people, and I use what I learned to support them. That emotional teenager helped me become a compassionate adult.

  FIRST DRAFT (student’s input)

Thirty years ago, I used to be very fashionable. I cared about my looks and spent time choosing outfits. People could see me walking down the street with high heels and bright lipstick. But beauty wasn’t everything—I wasn’t able to follow rules easily. I always wanted to do things my own way.

That personality sometimes caused problems at school, but it also helped me become a strong, independent woman. I’ve learned to balance confidence with kindness.

Teenagers can be wild, but that wildness becomes wisdom when we grow. I wouldn’t change who I was, I just used the fire to light a better path.
