READING 1

Violin? No, it’s a Cello!

Many different instruments make up an orchestra. There are violins, flutes, trumpets, and many others. But there’s a less well-known instrument in every orchestra too: the cello.

The cello is a big instrument. It looks like a very large violin. The violin is small enough to be held up in a musician’s arms, but the cello is too big for that. The cellist (the musician who plays the cello) keeps the instrument between his or her legs. A special piece called the endpin stays on the floor.

Like the violin, the cello has four strings. The strings are played with a tool called a bow. The cellist rubs the bow against the strings to make a sound. Cello strings are longer and thicker than a violin’s strings. This is why the cello sounds deeper and lower than a violin.

READING 2

This shiny brass instrument is loud and strong. It only has three buttons, called valves, but it can play many different notes. You blow air into it to make sound. It is often heard in jazz, marching bands, and classical music. One famous player was Louis Armstrong, who played it in What a Wonderful World.

READING 3

This small string instrument is usually held under your chin. It has four strings and is played with a bow. The sound is light and high. You can hear it in classical music and in soundtracks like Harry Potter. Famous players include Itzhak Perlman and Hilary Hahn.

READING 4

This wooden instrument is long and thin. You hold it sideways and blow across a small hole to make a sweet, high sound. It is very light and easy to carry. You can hear it in many songs, like in Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. Famous players include James Galway and Jeanne Baxtresser.

READING 5

This instrument doesn’t have strings. You hit it with sticks to make noise. It keeps the rhythm in a band. You can play it loudly or softly. It is used in all kinds of music: rock, jazz, classical. One famous player is Ringo Starr from The Beatles.

What is this instrument?

Aula de INGLÊS on-line - SPEAKING: atividade de prática da fala com gravação orientada e correção individual

By the time Clarice had enrolled at university, she HAD ALREADY BALANCED more roles than most people could imagine. She was a mother, a secretary, and now—after years of delay—an English student. Every day before class, she would secure her hair with a PIN, straighten her back, lift her CHIN, and take a deep breath as if tuning into the rhythm of her own ORCHESTRA. Her life wasn’t always FINE, but she had learned to swim like a FISH with a broken FIN: forward, slowly, and with purpose. From Monday TO Friday, she studied grammar IN the mornings and worked AT the office IN the afternoons. AT night, she made sure the house stayed TIDY and the laundry didn’t ride out with the TIDE of endless tasks.
ON weekends, Clarice found unexpected PLEASURE in simple moments. Sometimes her daughter played the TRUMPET while the kitchen echoed like a CHIME in the wind. Clarice STUDIED verb tenses early IN the morning, and BY noon she WROTE paragraphs about past events with a confidence she never thought she would gain. IN her English notebook, she once wrote a sentence comparing a PINE tree to a PIN dropped on paper – both small, but rooted in meaning. She knew she would never be perfect, but she was present. Life, she believed, doesn’t need to be easy to be beautiful. It only needs to be lived with rhythm, breath, and kindness – like music played by someone who has been both the audience and the artist.
